The Opportunity

Save the Children International has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as Legal Counsel at any existing Save the Children International office location (home based) within maximum 5 hours’ time difference from GMT.

ROLE PURPOSE:

Save the Children International (SCI) is looking to appoint two experienced, pragmatic and commercially-minded lawyers into permanent roles within its legal team.

The successful candidates will join the international programming arm of the legal team, supporting SCI’s international operations, including its humanitarian responses. 

This will involve:

A large focus for both roles will include advising SCI’s country offices and centre HQ in a diverse range of corporate and contractual matters, as well as on legal risk in the context of our humanitarian emergency responses, our development and other programming work, procurement, awards, finance, and HR. If interested, the role will also involve significant responsibility to advise SCI’s procurement and supply chain teams on both day-to-day contractual matters, as well as key strategic projects.

Working closely with SCI colleagues, the successful candidates will be expected to build strong relationships with all relevant stakeholders, engaging with and influencing those at all levels of SCI and in other parts of the movement, including senior leaders.

The SCI legal team supports one of the world’s leading international NGO charities, which works on the ground in 118 countries around the globe to help children affected by crises, as well as those that need better healthcare, education and child protection. In 2021 alone, Save the Children’s combined revenues amounted to more than US $2.2 billion.

These are fantastic opportunities for experienced lawyers, who have experience in the INGO sector or are looking to make the transfer from either in-house or private practice. The roles offer the opportunity to do interesting, challenging and truly meaningful work as part of a strong and dynamic, fun and friendly team of committed lawyers.

The roles are being offered on a permanent and full-time basis, although those looking to work on a part-time basis are welcome to apply.

The Person

You will need to be a solicitor or barrister qualified in England and Wales or a common law jurisdiction, ideally with circa. six years’ PQE. Experienced commercial lawyers are encouraged to apply.

On a personal level you will need to be a team player with strong attention to detail, and an eagerness to “roll up your sleeves”.

The salary offered is highly competitive for the sector at circa. £70,000 FTE and includes a generous annual leave allowance. You will be based at home, but may be required to travel to SCI’s London Office (situated behind Trafalgar Square) from time to time. If the role is based outside of the UK, National T&C (including pay) will apply.

This role can be based in London or any existing Save the Children International Regional or Country office location on approval, provided the successful candidate has proof of eligibility to work from the preferred location.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

• Extensive experience of commercial law, and experience in one or more of the following areas of law: general corporate, commercial / contract, employment, finance, treasury, charity/not-for-profit, data protection, intellectual property or dispute resolution.

• Demonstrated ability to business partner with a function/team/client, to understand their priorities and to come to pragmatic, legally appropriate solutions.

• Experience operating in a range of jurisdictions, including instructing overseas counsel.

• Ability to provide advice with authority at senior level, with excellent communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to strategically manage work priorities by addressing immediate critical issues and progressing long-term aims.

• Ability to work independently and use initiative to tackle new areas of law with confidence.

• Exceptional legal skills.

• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate with people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy.

• Maintains a calm disposition and positive outlook, particularly when working under pressure.

• Constructive approach.

• Team player, with a full appreciation of the value of collaboration.

• Good understanding of (and the ability to adapt to) the context in which Save the Children operates.
